Unlocking Growth and Transformation in South Africa's Furniture Industry
Membership Application
SAFI extends valuable non-financial support to its members through free mentorship and training programs. These initiatives are designed to equip members with essential skills, knowledge, and guidance necessary for success in the furniture industry. Whether it’s mentorship from industry experts or training sessions focused on business development, marketing strategies, or technical skills, SAFI’s non-financial support aims to empower members to excel in their endeavors.
South African Furniture Initiative (NPC) (SAFI) recently met with the FP&M SETA (SETA), the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB), the College of Cape Town, a registered Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) college, and industry members.
A major concern raised is the level of formalized training of artisans in the furniture industry and the offering by manufacturers of workplace experience for candidate artisans aspiring to qualify in an accredited trade.
SAFI was therefore requested to communicate the following important notification to furniture manufacturers:
1. Legacy Qualifications and Occupation Qualifications
Legacy qualifications consist of multiple individual unit standards, each focusing on practical competencies, theoretical knowledge, and critical cross-field outcomes. On the other hand, Qualifications Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) qualifications divide the legacy unit standards into three distinct modules: Knowledge, Practical Skills, and Work Experience.
The last date for enrollment for the legacy qualifications has been set at 30 June 2024, allowing learners to still pursue these qualifications until that date. Additionally, the last date for achievement of the legacy qualification has been extended to 30 June 2027, ensuring ample time for learners to complete their studies and assessments.
From 1 July 2024 learners will only be able to enroll for Occupational Qualifications.
2. Workplace Approval
Formal artisan qualifications are only possible with cooperation and input from furniture manufacturers, and you are therefore strongly urged to apply for workplace or site approval / extension for artisan training.
Workplace approvals are a delegated function of the Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) by the QCTO. Workplace approvals ensure that the relevant training plans for structured theory and practical work are adhered to. It is important as the learners are required to be placed at approved workplaces that meet certain criteria.
An application form is available below. Manufacturers are required to answer the questions on the first two pages. Andre Els (AndreE@fpmseta.org.za) from the SETA is available to assist with the completion of the applications and will also advise on the correct Organising Framework for Occupations (OFO) Code. Your cooperation in regard to the above is appreciated as we collectively work towards a sustainable furniture manufacturing industry.
